This Tuesday the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares reported that he will meet with the Venezuelan charge d’affaires in Spain, Mauricio Rodríguez Gelfenstein to discuss the dialogue process that is taking place in Mexico.
This announcement was made in an appearance in Parliament, where he announced that he will later meet with the opposition extremist and fugitive from Venezuelan justice, Leopoldo López who is designated as the mentor of Juan Guaidó who proclaimed himself as “internal president”, a position that It has ceased to be recognized by Spain and the European Union after the new parliament took office on January 5, 2021.
Albares indicated that among the contacts to be established, there is also the leader of Primero Justicia, Henrique Capriles Radonski, who after the failure of the “interim government” plan has been inclined towards reintegration into democratic politics, marking distance from the insurrectionary wing led by López .
This initiative of the Spanish Chancellor arises after last August 13, delegations of the Executive and the Venezuelan opposition signed a memorandum of understanding in Mexico in which the self-proclaimed “Unitary Platform of Venezuela” recognizes the Government of Maduro as legitimate and where both showed willingness to “agree on the necessary conditions for the electoral processes enshrined in the Constitution to be carried out with all the guarantees and understanding the need for international sanctions to be lifted.”
